You pray, but it feels like no one is listening. You open your Bible, and the words sit flat on the page. You sing in worship, and your heart stays cold. If that describes your season right now, you are not backsliding, broken, or uniquely faithless. You are walking a road nearly every believer has walked, and it has a name: spiritual dryness.
Here is the truth you need before anything else. Feeling distant from God does not mean God is distant from you. Even David, the man after God’s own heart, cried out in the psalms asking how long the Lord would hide His face. Even Jesus, carrying the weight of the cross, cried, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). Silence from heaven is not proof of absence. Often, it is an invitation to go deeper.
Your Feelings Are Not the Truth
Most of us quietly measure our relationship with God by emotion. If we feel His presence, we assume He is near. If we feel nothing, we assume He has moved on. But feelings are weather, not climate. They rise and fall with sleep, stress, hormones, and circumstances. God’s presence is not anchored to your emotions; it is anchored to His promise.
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5
David voiced the same ache honestly before God:
“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”
Psalm 13:1
Notice that David did not stop praying when he felt forgotten. He prayed his feelings to God instead of letting his feelings pray him away from God. That is faith.
Ask Whether Sin Is Building a Barrier
God’s love for you is unconditional, but unconfessed sin can dull your sense of His closeness. Scripture is direct about this:
“Your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”
Isaiah 59:2
If God feels far away, it is worth asking honest questions. Is there unforgiveness you have been nursing? A conviction you have been ignoring? Something God asked you to release that you are still gripping? Sin does not cancel God’s love, but it can cloud your fellowship with Him. The remedy is not shame; it is confession.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9
Sometimes God Is Growing Your Faith
There is another possibility that surprises many believers: God sometimes allows seasons of dryness on purpose. If you only ever sought Him when the feelings were strong, would you be seeking Him, or seeking the feeling? Faith that has never trusted in the dark is faith that has never really been tested. Job lost nearly everything and still declared:
“Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.”
Job 13:15
So keep praying when it feels mechanical. Keep worshiping when your heart lags behind your voice. Keep trusting when the silence is deafening. God is not gone. He is drawing you deeper, from a faith built on emotion to a faith built on Him.
You Might Just Need to Be Still
There is also a simpler explanation. We live surrounded by noise: notifications, endless scrolling, busyness that never lets up. Sometimes we do not feel God because we have not been quiet long enough to notice Him.
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Psalm 46:10
Ask yourself: have I actually made unhurried time to sit in His presence? Have I prayed in a way that listens, not just speaks? God is always speaking. The question is whether we have given Him any space to be heard. And He has left us a standing promise for every seeking heart:
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:13
Watch: God is still there.
