You stopped saying it out loud a while ago. Somewhere in the last year the certainty went quiet, and now you sit through the songs with a question you would be embarrassed to admit at church.
You have probably decided that means something went wrong with you, that real faith would not wobble. Before you accept that, a man in Scripture asked your exact question, and he had more reason to be certain than you do.

The Question He Sent From a Prison Cell
John the Baptist spent his life pointing at one person. He baptized Jesus in the Jordan and stood there when the sky opened and a voice named Jesus as the Son God loved. Then Herod put him in a cell.
“Meanwhile John heard in prison about the works of Christ, and he sent his disciples to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?””Matthew 11:2-3
If anyone alive had proof, it was him, and he still asked.
Doubt Is Not a Gap in Your Information
When you admit you are struggling to believe, people hand you material. Read this book. Watch this debate. The assumption is that doubt is a hole in what you know and the right paragraph closes it. If that were true, John would have been immune.
Here is what changed. John had preached a Messiah arriving with fire, with an axe already lying at the root of the trees. Then the reports reached his cell. Jesus was healing people, eating with tax collectors, telling stories about lost sheep. No fire. No axe. Herod still on his throne.
His question was not really are You real. It was closer to this: You are not doing what You said You would do. Most people whose faith has started to feel weak are not arguing about whether God exists. Life handed them a gap between the God they were promised and the God who showed up. Asaph admitted he nearly walked away, and God left that complaint in Scripture rather than editing it out, which is why the anger you have been afraid to pray is not proof of unbelief.
Jesus Sent a List, Not a Rebuke
Start with what is missing. No where is your faith. No reminder that John should know better. The correction is not there, and many of us carry a version of God who would have given one.
“Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.”Matthew 11:4-5
That is not a proof. It is a set of checkable things that were happening, handed to a man who could not go and see them himself. Jesus did not tell him to feel certain. He gave him something to look at.
The Line He Left Out of Isaiah
That list is quoted from Isaiah, and the passage He is drawing from keeps going.
“to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of our God’s vengeance, to comfort all who mourn,”Isaiah 61:2
Jesus stopped before the vengeance, here and again when He read it aloud in a synagogue. Which is Jesus saying gently to a man in a cell: you were not wrong. The fire is real. It is just not today.
What to Do With the Question This Week
Now the honest part. John never got out. He was executed in that prison. Jesus sent him an answer and not a rescue. But the moment those messengers walked away, Jesus turned to the crowd.
“Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”Matthew 11:11
He said it right after the doubt, not after John had pulled himself together. So say your question out loud to God this week, in the words you would actually use. He never asked you to be certain before He would call you His, which is worth holding onto the next time you catch yourself wondering whether you are actually saved. If it was the church that broke this, find a counselor qualified to sit with you.
