When Prayer Feels Like Talking to the Ceiling

Psalm 46:10

There is a season in most people’s faith where prayer stops feeling like communication and starts feeling like a monologue in an empty room.

The usual response is to assume something is wrong with you. Insufficient faith, unconfessed sin, the wrong technique. So you either try harder or quietly stop.

But the people who have written most helpfully about prayer across two thousand years describe this experience consistently. It is not evidence of failure. For many it turns out to be the point where prayer stops being about the feeling it produces and becomes about the Person it is addressed to.

A relationship that only continues while it is emotionally rewarding is not a deep relationship. It is a transaction.

Keep talking. Say the boring, honest things. Presence is not measured by atmosphere, and He has not moved.
