The Trap of Almost Honest

1 John 1:9

Confession is easy in general and hard in particular.

It costs nothing to acknowledge that you are a flawed person in a broad sense. Everyone agrees to that. What costs something is naming the specific thing, the pattern you have been managing rather than repenting of, the version of events you have told so many times you have started believing it.

We are unusually gifted at partial honesty. We confess the presentable sins and quietly file the rest under personality, or stress, or the way they treated me first.

The promise in 1 John is specific: confess, and He is faithful to forgive and to cleanse. Forgiveness deals with the record. Cleansing deals with the appetite. Most of us want the first and avoid the second, because the second requires telling the truth about what we actually want.

Name one specific thing today. Just one.
