David chooses his verb carefully. Create in me a clean heart.
Create is the word used at the beginning of Genesis, of making something out of nothing. He does not ask for repair, or improvement, or a better version of what is already there. He asks for something new to be brought into existence.
That is an admission underneath a request. He has evidently tried the repair approach and found it insufficient. Anyone who has attempted to fix a persistent pattern by effort recognizes the moment he is describing.
Renew a right spirit within me. Within. Not around, not in his circumstances, not in how others see him. The thing that needs remaking is interior, and he is not in a position to do it himself.
That is where this psalm becomes useful. It is the prayer of someone who has stopped negotiating and started asking plainly.
