The instruction is in everything, not for everything. That distinction saves the verse from cruelty.
You are not asked to be thankful that the diagnosis came, or that the marriage ended. You are asked to look for what is still true inside a situation that is not good.
This matters because attention is selective and self reinforcing. Whatever you practice noticing, you get better at noticing. A mind trained on threat finds threat efficiently. A mind trained on mercy starts finding mercy in places it previously walked past.
Gratitude is not pretending the hard thing is fine. It is refusing to let the hard thing be the only thing you can see.
Name three today. Small ones count, probably count most. Do it again tomorrow. In a month you will notice your default has moved, and you will not be able to point to the day it happened.
