That runs against everything we assume about change. We think in terms of effort applied over time, and there is a place for effort. But the thing described here is not improvement. It is replacement.
A heart of stone cannot be softened by trying harder to be soft. Stone does not respond to willpower. It has to be taken out and something else put in.
Which is a relief, if you have been failing at the same thing for years and reading each failure as evidence about your character. You have been attempting surgery on yourself with the wrong tools.
The invitation is smaller and harder than effort. Stop managing the stone. Ask for the exchange. Then cooperate with a heart you did not manufacture and could not have.
