The Long Middle

Isaiah 40:31

Read Isaiah’s progression in reverse and it becomes more honest: mount up, run, walk.

We want the eagle imagery. Soaring is the part that gets quoted. But the passage ends with walking and not fainting, and that is the least glamorous and most common experience of faith.

Most of the Christian life is walking. The dramatic season of calling is short. The season of quietly not quitting is long.

And notice the verb that starts it: wait. Renewal is promised to people who are waiting, not to people who are producing. The strength is not manufactured by effort — it is exchanged. Yours runs out, His does not, and waiting is how the trade happens.

If you are in the long middle right now, you are not failing at the exciting part. You are doing the actual part.
