Grace Is Not a License

Romans 8:28

There are two ways to misunderstand grace, and most of us alternate between them.

The first is to treat it as insufficient, to believe that God’s forgiveness covers ordinary failure but not yours specifically, and so to live in a low hum of disqualification.

The second is to treat it as permission. If it is all covered, the reasoning goes, then the details do not much matter.

Both misunderstand what it cost. Grace is free to you and it was not free. The standard was not lowered so you could clear it; it was met on your behalf.

Which is why grace, properly understood, does not produce carelessness. It produces gratitude, and gratitude is the most durable motivation there is. Fear runs out. Obligation resents. Gratitude keeps going.

You are more loved than you believe and more accountable than you would prefer. Both at once.
