Does God Care When the Storm Hits?

Mark 4:38-40

The disciples’ question in the boat is one of the most honest lines in the Gospels. They did not ask Jesus to calm the storm. They asked whether He cared.

That is often the real question underneath a hard season. We ask why this is happening, but what we want to know is whether God cares that it is happening to us.

Mark gives the details plainly. It was evening. Jesus had told them they were crossing to the other side. A violent windstorm came up and the waves broke over the boat until it was being swamped. Several of these men were fishermen who knew that lake. They were not panicking over nothing. And Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion.

You may know what it is to look at God’s apparent calm while the water rises. The layoff notice arrives the same week the car needs a new transmission. You prayed, you are still praying, and heaven seems to be sleeping through it.

Notice what Jesus does first. He does not lecture them and then decide whether to help. He gets up and rebukes the wind, and the sea goes perfectly calm. Only after that does He ask why they were so afraid and whether they still had no faith.

His question does not dismiss the storm. The storm was real. He is pointing at what their fear assumed: that His sleep meant indifference, and that the boat could go down with Him in it. He had already told them where they were going. He was in the same boat, in the same weather.

The story ends with the disciples overwhelmed with fear of a different kind, asking each other who this is that even the wind and the sea obey. They had just found out how much power had been resting on that cushion.

Today, say your real question to God out loud, the way they did. Then write down one specific time in the past when He brought you through something you were sure would sink you. Keep it where you will see it this week.
