The Lord Will Fight for You, and Then He Says Go Forward

Exodus 14:14

Moses tells a panicking crowd that they do not have to win this one. God will do the fighting. Their part is to stop.

Most people know what it is like to stand where Israel stood. The diagnosis comes back. The layoff email arrives. The bill is larger than the account. Behind you is the thing you thought you had escaped, and in front of you is something you cannot cross. Your mind does what Israel’s did. It starts rehearsing every way this goes wrong, and it starts looking for someone to blame.

Israel blamed Moses. Were there no graves in Egypt, they asked, that you brought us out here to die? They even said slavery would have been better. Fear rewrote their memory of Egypt in about five minutes.

Moses does not argue with them. He tells them not to be afraid, to stand firm, and to watch what God is about to do. The Egyptians they see today, they will never see again. Then comes the line about God fighting for them while they are still.

What happens next is worth noticing. God immediately says to Moses, why are you crying out to Me? Tell the people to go forward. The stillness was never meant to be passive. It was the end of the panic, not the end of obedience. Once the shouting stopped, they could hear the instruction, and the instruction was to walk toward the water while God opened it.

So being still before God is not the same as doing nothing. It is stopping the frantic part of you that thinks everything depends on your planning, so you can actually hear what the next step is. Often the next step is small and plain.

If you are at your own Red Sea today, take ten quiet minutes before you make another phone call or open another spreadsheet. Sit down, tell God what is behind you and what is in front of you, and then stop talking. When you get up, do only the next obvious thing, and leave the parting of the water to Him.
