The Cost of Bitterness

Psalm 103:12

Bitterness makes an excellent case for itself. It presents as justice, or discernment, or simply having learned your lesson.

But watch what it actually does. It requires constant maintenance, rehearsing the offense to keep it fresh. It narrows your generosity toward people who had nothing to do with it. It slowly makes you into a person whose defining feature is something that was done to you.

The person who wronged you is not paying any of this. You are.

The psalm gives a measurement: as far as the east is from the west. North and south are finite, you can travel north and eventually start heading south. East and west never meet. The image is deliberate: an unclosable distance between you and what you have done.

If He put that much distance between you and your worst, you can afford to put some between you and theirs.
