How to Forgive Family Who Hurt You: Joseph and His Brothers

Genesis 45:5

Joseph does not tell his brothers that what they did was fine. In the same breath that he forgives them, he says it plainly: you sold me. Forgiveness in this passage starts with the truth, not a cover story.

Families are where this is hardest. A sister who said something at the funeral you still replay. A father who left and now wants to come to Thanksgiving like nothing happened. You can be polite at the table for years and still be holding the receipt in your pocket.

The background matters. Joseph’s brothers threw him in a pit and sold him to traders when he was seventeen. He spent years as a slave and then in prison for something he did not do. More than twenty years pass before this scene. When it finally comes, Joseph has to send everyone else out of the room because he cannot stop weeping. He is not calm. He is not over it. He tells them who he is, and they are too frightened to answer.

Then he says something remarkable. Do not be distressed or angry with yourselves. He has looked at the whole story and found God in it, sending him ahead to keep a family alive through a famine. That does not make the brothers innocent. It means their sin is not the deepest thing that happened. God was working underneath it the whole time.

That is what lets Joseph forgive. He sees the story from a wider place than the pit, and that changes what he does with the people who put him there. He invites them to live near him. He promises to provide for their children. By the end of the chapter he is kissing each of them, and finally they talk with him.

You may not be ready for the embrace. Joseph had tested his brothers first and seen that they had changed. But you can start where he started. Today, write down plainly what your family member did, in one sentence, without softening it. Then, underneath, write one place where you can see God still at work in your life since then. Pray over both lines before you decide anything else.
