You look at where you are right now, and then you look at where you thought you’d be, and something in your heart sinks. It’s the middle of the year, and you feel behind. Behind on your goals, behind on your dreams, behind on who you told yourself you were going to become. January felt like a door opening. June feels like evidence that you couldn’t walk through it.
You haven’t said it out loud to many people. But at night, when it’s just you, you feel that low, heavy whisper: you wasted it. If that is where you are, there is something you have been missing, and it changes everything.

Who Told You That You Were Behind?
You had real plans this year, plans you prayed over, plans you believed God placed in your heart. Maybe a relationship, a career, your health, your finances, or simply growing closer to Him. And somewhere between January and now, it didn’t happen the way you imagined. So you started measuring yourself against your own expectations, against other people’s highlights, against the version of you that January believed in. And the measurement said: not enough.
But here is the question worth sitting with: who told you that you were behind? The world gave you a calendar, twelve months, two halves, a deadline. You pressed that calendar against your life and decided you should be further along by now. God never gave you a deadline. He gave you a purpose, a path, and His presence for every single step of it. “Behind” is a word the world invented. God does not measure your life in months, and He does not compare your chapter three to someone else’s chapter ten. You are comparing your interior to their exterior, which is a contest rigged against you regardless of the facts.
God’s Plans for You Have Not Expired
The promise God spoke through Jeremiah did not come with an expiration date:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”Jeremiah 29:11
He did not say plans that expire in June, or plans that only work if you stay on schedule. He said hope. He said future. He said, “I know.” And He still knows, even now, even in the middle of a year that looked nothing like you prayed it would. Scripture adds another layer of hope for the one who feels stuck:
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”Isaiah 43:19
God is always moving forward, and He is not moving forward without you.
The Record God Has Been Keeping
Here is the part you may not have allowed yourself to hear yet: God has been watching, and His record of your year looks nothing like yours. He saw the morning you got up and tried again when everything in you said don’t bother. He saw the prayer you whispered that you were certain went nowhere. He saw you choose patience when anger would have been easier, show up exhausted, and love people who were difficult to love.
You called those things nothing. God called them everything. You think you have nothing to show for this year, but you were being shaped inside it, and only God can see the full picture of what is being formed in you. The season of quietly not quitting is the long one, and it is not the part where you are failing. You did not waste this year.
The Second Half Starts Now
So stop looking only at where you thought you’d be, and look at what is still ahead. If you are not content yet, you are not disqualified, you are in the middle of the curriculum. The year is not over. Your story is not over. God is not done. The second half of this year belongs to you, not to your regrets, not to your unmet expectations, not to the voice that told you it was already too late. And He will walk every single day of it beside you. Not because you finally got everything right, but because you are His, and He does not walk away from what belongs to Him.
You are not behind in God’s eyes. You are exactly where He can reach you, and He is reaching you right now.
