Feel Like You Wasted This Year? God Kept a Different Record

Christian Living 4 min read

You look at where you are, then at where you thought you would be by now, and something in your chest drops. January felt like a door opening. The back half of the year feels like evidence that you never walked through it.

You have mostly kept this quiet. At night, when it is just you, the thought arrives in three words. You wasted it.

Who Told You That You Were Behind?

The world handed you a calendar. Twelve months, two halves, a deadline. You pressed that calendar against your life and concluded you should be further along.

Notice that the deadline came from the calendar, not from God. He gave you a purpose and a path and His presence for the walking of it. He never issued a schedule you could fall behind on.

“My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.”Psalm 31:15

Your times sit in His hands rather than in a date. Behind is a measurement the world invented, and it is not the unit God uses to think about you.

The Plans Did Not Expire in June

The promise people quote every January carries no end date, which is exactly the part that gets forgotten by summer.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.”Jeremiah 29:11

It does not say plans that expire mid year, or plans that only hold if you stay on schedule. It says a future and a hope, and it was written to people in exile who were nowhere near where they expected to be. If you want the fuller context, read what Jeremiah 29:11 actually promised and to whom.

He Kept a Different Record

Here is the part most people never let themselves hear. You have been keeping a record of this year built entirely from what did not happen. God kept a different one.

He saw the morning you got up and tried again when everything in you said not to bother. He saw the prayer you were certain went nowhere. He saw you choose patience when anger was easier, hold your tongue, show up exhausted, love people who were difficult to love.

You filed all of that under nothing.

“For God is not unjust. He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so.”Hebrews 6:10

God is not unjust, and forgetting that quiet faithfulness would be precisely that. The invisible effort and the small obedience are not missing from His account of your year. They are most of it, and your worth was never tied to your output in the first place.

Being Shaped Is Not the Same as Wasting

A year in which little arrived is not automatically a year in which nothing happened. Seasons shifted before you were ready and life moved in directions you did not choose, and you were being formed the whole way through.

“To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:”Ecclesiastes 3:1

Growth that happens inside a hard stretch rarely announces itself while it is going on. You are usually the last person able to see it. That is why measuring your life against a timeline you invented gives you an answer that was wrong before you started.

What the Second Half Is For

The year is not over and neither is the story. The months in front of you do not belong to your regrets or to the voice insisting it is already too late.

“Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”Galatians 6:9

So here is the one thing to do this week. Take ten minutes, and instead of listing what did not happen, write down what you actually did that nobody saw. The times you showed up, kept your word, stayed kind when it cost you. Not a goals audit. A record of faithfulness, the one God has been keeping all along.

Read it back when the weight returns, because you will need it before December. You are not behind. You are exactly where He can reach you, and He has never once walked away from what belongs to Him.
