It’s quiet now. They’re finally asleep, the house is still, and you’re sitting in the silence with nothing left. No energy, no patience, no words, just the kind of tired that sleep doesn’t fix. And you won’t tell anyone how close you came today to completely falling apart.
Maybe no one clapped today. No one noticed the appointments you scheduled, the meals eaten without a thank you, the fights you broke up, the invisible weight of keeping everyone alive and okay. But heaven noticed. Here is what God wants the exhausted parent to know tonight.
God Watched the Real You Today
God has not been watching the version of you that shows up online. He has been watching the real one: the one who sat on the bathroom floor because it was the only room with a lock, who whispered prayers at two in the morning while rocking a crying baby, who read the same bedtime story for the hundredth time while everything inside was begging for silence.
“He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” (Psalm 121:3-4)
He did not take his eyes off you during the tantrums, the tears, or the moments you thought you were completely alone in this. You were never alone in this.
Guilt Is Not the Voice of God
After the exhaustion comes the guilt, the whisper that says other parents handle this better, that a good mother or father wouldn’t feel this resentful, this empty, this desperate for five minutes alone. You feel guilty for being tired of the very thing you love most, and that guilt makes you feel like something is wrong with you.
Nothing is wrong with you. You are not a bad parent for running out of patience. You are not failing your children because you cried in the car after drop-off. Loving your kids with everything you have while wishing someone would take care of you for once is not weakness. It is honesty, and God has never been afraid of your honesty.
God Measures Love by What It Costs
God is not grading you on perfection; there is no such thing as a perfect parent. He is proud of you because you kept showing up. He measures love by what it costs, and yours has cost you sleep, peace, time, dreams, and even your identity beyond the word mom or dad. You poured yourself out until nothing was left, then woke up and did it again. You call that not enough. He calls it holy.
Rest Is Not Abandoning Your Family
You are allowed to be tired. You are allowed to need help. You are allowed to not enjoy every moment and still be a wonderful parent. Rest is not abandoning your family; rest is how you keep loving them well.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29)
And your children are going to be okay. Not because you were perfect, but because you were present. They will not remember every meal or every mistake, but they will remember that you were there.
“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” (Psalm 127:3)
They were his before they were yours, and he is parenting them with you. You were never meant to do this alone, and you never have been.
