You have asked it before. Probably late, when the house had gone quiet and nothing was left to distract you from it. Am I actually saved?
And you have most likely never said it out loud, because it sounds dramatic, or faithless, or like something you should have settled long ago. So you carry it alone. There is an entire letter in the Bible written for people asking exactly this, and almost nobody is told that is what it is for.

The Loop You Cannot Get Out Of
You pray the prayer again, quietly, in case the first one did not take. You examine the moment it happened, looking for the flaw. Were you repentant, or just scared? Your feelings are never convincing enough. If the fear underneath is that you keep confessing the same thing, look at what Scripture says about the same sin brought back again.
John Wrote an Entire Letter for This
One author, two books, two purposes. Near the end of his Gospel, John says why he wrote it.
“But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.”John 20:31
Then the same man writes to people already in.
“I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”1 John 5:13
Not so you may believe. So you may know. If everyone who had eternal life felt sure of it, that sentence would never have needed writing. You do not reassure people who are not worried. Its presence in Scripture is proof you can belong to God and still not feel certain. Your uncertainty is not a verdict. It is a condition God addressed on purpose.
If You Fear You Committed the Unpardonable Sin
For some of you this is the whole thing. A thought went through your mind once that horrified you and you did not choose.
“But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of eternal sin.”Mark 3:29
Mark says in the next line that Jesus meant the men claiming he had an unclean spirit. They watched him heal people and called it the power of Satan to protect their own position, and they were comfortable doing it. A heart that has genuinely stopped caring does not agonise about having stopped caring. Your terror is the opposite of the thing you fear.
When It Is Anxiety Wearing Theological Clothes
For many asking this, it is not mainly a theological problem. There is a well documented pattern where the brain’s threat detection system, the same one that makes someone check a locked door eleven times, latches on to faith instead. That is not weak faith, and it responds well to real treatment. Talking to a Christian counselor is not a lack of trust in God. It is using the help he provided. It also explains why reassurance expires. Every time you check, you teach the fear that it deserves checking, which is near to why a faith that feels weak is not a faith that has failed.
You Were Never the One Holding On
Every version of this question assumes staying saved depends on your hold on God. That is why you keep testing your grip.
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.”John 10:28-29
Two hands, his and the Father’s. He does not say hold on tightly. He says you are held.
Answer It Once, Then Stop
Here is the one thing to do this week. Take it to one pastor or one counselor, one time, and say the whole thing out loud, including the part that embarrasses you. Not a fifth video, not another article at midnight.
And stop repeating the prayer. Praying it again says the last one failed, and the promise was never in the wording. Rest on it rather than on the feeling, which is most of what walking by faith rather than by feelings means. Certainty never came from a feeling you can manufacture or a grip you can tighten. It comes from a promise made by someone who does not break them. You can stop checking now.
