You have prayed about it. You have repented of everything you can name. You have shown up on Sunday with the right expression on your face, sung the songs, and driven home with the same weight sitting exactly where it was.
This is not spiritual dryness and it is not a hard week. It is the kind of dark that does not lift for worship music or a quiet time. Underneath it there is usually shame, because you believe and you are still not okay.

The Lie You Were Probably Handed
Being a Christian and depressed is treated by a lot of people as a contradiction. Somewhere along the way someone told you that depression is a faith problem. That if you prayed harder, read more, or surrendered more completely, the darkness would lift.
They almost certainly meant well. What they handed you was a weight on top of a weight, because now you also carry the belief that your depression is evidence God has withdrawn, or that you have failed Him.
That belief is not in Scripture. What is in Scripture is considerably more honest than most of what gets said from a stage.
David Did Not Clean It Up
The man described as being after God’s own heart wrote lines that would make most small groups uncomfortable.
“I am weary from groaning; all night I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.”Psalm 6:6
He did not tidy that before handing it over. Elsewhere he asks the question plainly.
“How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?”Psalm 13:1
God does not rebuke him for asking. The complaint was preserved and handed to us as something to pray rather than something to hide. Silence from heaven has never been proof of absence.
Elijah Asked to Die and God Sent Food
Elijah had just called down fire in front of a nation. Days later he was under a tree asking God to end his life.
What follows is one of the gentlest passages in the Old Testament. There is no rebuke about his faith. An angel wakes him, twice, and feeds him.
“A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.””1 Kings 19:7
The first thing God addressed was exhaustion and hunger. Sleep and food came before anything spiritual, and that order is not an accident.
Not Every Darkness Is a Spiritual Failure
Paul describes the whole created order as groaning.
“We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until the present time.”Romans 8:22
You are a human being made of dust in a world that is not yet whole. Things happen to human minds that are not moral failures. Brain chemistry, grief, trauma and illness are not sins to repent of, and treating them that way has kept many believers from help they needed years earlier.
Getting help is not an admission that you stopped trusting God. He put wisdom in medicine and in people trained to carry what cannot be carried alone. Calling a counsellor is not a smaller faith than praying. Often it is what praying leads to.
Where This Leaves You
God is not standing at the edge of your darkness waiting for you to climb out so He can finally reach you. David settled that too.
“If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.”Psalm 139:8
So here is the one thing to do today, and it is deliberately small. Tell one person the truth about what is happening. Make one call. Take one step toward help. And on the days when none of that is possible and all you can manage is to keep breathing, let that be enough, because your faith is not being measured by your output.
