Peter’s warning is often read as a description of dramatic, obvious opposition. Roaring lions are hard to miss.
But the first appearance of the adversary in Scripture is not a roar. It is a question. Did God really say? Reasonable in tone, conversational, easy to mistake for your own reflection.
That is usually how it works. Not a frontal assault on your faith but a slow erosion of your confidence in what God has said. You are not enough. This will never change. He has forgotten you. Notice that these thoughts almost always arrive in the first person, which is precisely what makes them effective.
Sobriety, in Peter’s sense, is the practice of noticing. Of asking where a thought came from before you agree with it.
You do not have to win an argument you never agreed to have. You just have to recognize whose voice is talking.
