Reading the Bible Without Rushing

Psalm 119:105

A lamp to your feet is a strangely modest image. Not a floodlight over the whole valley, just enough light for the next step.

Most of us want the floodlight. We open Scripture hoping for a map of the next five years and close it disappointed because we got a sentence about today instead.

But a lamp at your feet is exactly what you need on a dark path. It keeps you from falling, and it requires you to stay close to the one carrying it.

Try reading less tomorrow. One paragraph. Read it three times slowly. Ask what it says about God before you ask what it demands of you. Sit with the discomfort of not extracting an immediate application.

The goal was never information. It was the voice of Someone who knows you, at the pace a conversation actually moves.
