Everyone wanted to talk about the money. The severance, the savings, how long you could stretch it. You let them, because that was the easier conversation. But money was the smallest thing that afternoon took, and you have not found a way to say so out loud.
It took the shape of your week. Somewhere to be by eight. People who expected you. If you are losing your job and your identity in the same season, there is an order in the opening pages of Genesis that almost nobody notices.

The Money Was the Smallest Thing You Lost
You never realized how much of you was held together by having somewhere to be. The drive. The person at the coffee machine. Finishing a day knowing something happened because you were there. Nobody grieves those out loud, so you grieve them alone.
The Sentence You Have Not Said to Anyone
The hardest hour was not the meeting. It was the drive home, deciding on the way how to phrase it so the fear would not land on their faces. Somebody did the math silently and said it would be okay. Since then you have carried one sentence you have never said to anyone. I failed the people who were counting on me.
God Made the Man Before He Gave Him Any Work
Look at the sequence in Genesis rather than the sentiment. God formed the first man out of the ground, then breathed His own breath into him.
“Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.”Genesis 2:7
He was already carrying the life and image of God. Only afterward does work appear.
“Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.”Genesis 2:15
Work was handed to a man who was already fully valuable. It never made him valuable, and that order has not changed since, which is the ground covered in what God says about your worth when you feel like nothing.
Jesus Cooked Breakfast Before He Mentioned Peter’s Future
Peter denied Jesus three times on the worst night there has ever been, then went back to fishing, because the old trade was the only thing left he knew how to be. They worked all night and caught nothing. Jesus watched him come up out of the water soaking wet, and did not lecture him. A charcoal fire was already going.
““Come, have breakfast,” Jesus said to them. None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You?” They knew it was the Lord.”John 21:12
He came to Peter at his old job, in the middle of his failure, and fed him before He said a word about the calling.
Joseph Sat Forgotten for Two Full Years
Sold by his own brothers, accused of something he did not do and thrown into a prison. Inside it he helped a man and asked one favor. Remember me when things go well for you.
“The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot all about him.”Genesis 40:23
Two years passed before anything moved, and Joseph did not know they were only two years while he sat inside them. Long is not the same thing as forgotten, which matters when you are feeling behind in life and watching everyone else move.
Get Up at a Real Hour Tomorrow
Do this one thing while you wait. Set an alarm and get dressed at a real hour every weekday, even with nowhere to be. The loss of structure will cost you more than the loss of income. Stop searching your life for the sin that caused this. Budgets get cut by people who never met you. If money is what keeps you awake, God already knows the figure, which is the honest answer to whether God cares about your finances.
Your title changed and your calendar emptied. None of it reached the part of you that God named when He breathed into the dust.
