Who You Are When It Costs You

Joshua 1:9

Everyone has principles when they are free.

The real content of what you believe shows up at the moment holding it costs you something — a relationship, a promotion, standing in a room you wanted to be in. That is when belief stops being an opinion and becomes a commitment.

God’s charge to Joshua is repeated so many times in the first chapter that it stops sounding like encouragement and starts sounding like preparation. He was not being told courage would feel good. He was being told to choose it, repeatedly, in circumstances that would argue otherwise.

And the reason given is not that Joshua was capable. It is that God would be with him wherever he went. The courage was borrowed.

Whatever it costs you this week, you are not being asked to generate the strength for it yourself.
