We have turned this into a scheduling verse. Get up earlier, read before the phone, put God at the start of the day.
None of that is bad. It is also not what first means here.
Look at what surrounds it. Food, drink, clothing. Jesus is talking to people genuinely unsure whether they will eat. First is not about sequence in a morning routine. It is about what your life is organised around when the pressure is real.
Which is a harder question. Not what you do at six in the morning, but what you sacrifice for when something has to give.
And all these things will be added to you. Not removed, not treated as unspiritual. The needs are legitimate. They are simply not the organising principle, because a life organised around them never actually feels secure, no matter how much of them arrives.
