I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit.
The image does most of the teaching. A branch does not strain to produce fruit. It has no technique. Its entire job is to stay attached to something that is already alive, and fruit is a consequence of that connection rather than an achievement.
Remain is the operative word and it is unglamorous. Not achieve, not strive, not perform. Stay.
Then the last clause, which is where people flinch. Apart from Me you can do nothing.
That sounds harsh until you notice it is simply a description of how branches work. A branch separated from the vine does not do worse. It does nothing, because the life was never coming from the branch.
So the question for today is not whether you are producing enough. It is whether you are still attached.
