My Sheep Listen to My Voice

John 10:27-28

Three verbs describe the sheep and only one of them is about effort. They listen, they are known, they follow. Everything after that is what the shepherd does.

I give them eternal life. They will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand.

Jesus says this in Jerusalem in winter, at the Feast of Dedication, walking in the temple courts. People have surrounded Him and demanded that He tell them plainly whether He is the Christ. He answers that He has told them, and that the ones who belong to Him recognize His voice. The words about safety are said in the middle of a hostile crowd, not a quiet room.

Notice who the sentence is about. The security does not rest on the quality of the listening. If it did, most of us would have lost it by Tuesday. It rests on the grip.

Think of a Sunday night after a week in which you prayed twice, briefly, and both times in the car. You open a Bible out of guilt, read a few lines, and close it again. The thought arrives that maybe this is what drifting away looks like.

And snatch is a violent word. It anticipates something trying. The promise is not that nothing will pull at you. It is that the pulling will not work.

That is worth knowing on the days your faith feels thin, because thin faith is not the same as no hand. The hand is not holding you more tightly on your good days. It does not loosen on the bad ones either.

Listen for the voice today in something small. A verse, a conviction you cannot shake, a nudge toward someone. When it comes, do the first concrete thing it points to before the day is out. Send the message. Make the apology. Then follow it again tomorrow.
