Living in the Shelter of the Most High

Psalm 91:1-2

The verb is dwells. Not visits, not retreats to when things get bad. Dwells.

Most of us treat God as emergency accommodation. Life holds, we manage on our own, and then something cracks and we arrive at the door asking for cover. He gives it. That is not the point being made here.

The psalm describes an address. Somebody who already lives there when the trouble starts, who is not arriving breathless and unfamiliar, who knows where things are.

That changes what daily faith is for. The ordinary praying, the reading nobody sees, the small returns to God on days when nothing is wrong. None of it is filler. It is residency.

And the second line makes the promise physical. Abide in the shadow of the Almighty. A shadow means you are close enough to be covered. You cannot be in someone’s shadow from across the field.
