Delight Yourself in the Lord and See What Changes

Psalm 37:4

This verse gets quoted as a mechanism. Enjoy God enough and the list gets approved.

Read that way it eventually fails, and it takes some faith down with it. People delight, the thing does not arrive, and they conclude they were not delighting correctly.

But look at what is actually being promised. He will give you the desires of your heart. Not the items on the list. The desires themselves. What you want is the thing being handed over.

That is a slower and stranger gift. It means proximity changes appetite. Spend real time near someone and you start wanting what they want, without deciding to.

Which does not make your current wants shameful. Plenty of them are good. It just means the promise runs deeper than acquisition, and the people who have lived it longest describe wanting different things than they did, and being relieved about it.
