A Prayer When Plans Fall Apart

Lord, the thing I had been building toward is not going to happen and I am still absorbing that. Let me grieve it honestly before I go looking for the lesson in it. Keep me from deciding that You are against me. When I can see again, show me what is actually in front of me now. Amen.

A Prayer for an Aging Parent

God, I am watching someone who once carried me become someone who needs carrying. I do not always handle it well and I am often more frightened than patient. Give them dignity in the parts that are hardest. Give me the grace to honor them now rather than only in what I say afterward. Amen.

A Prayer for the Work I Do Not Want to Do

Lord, this task has been moved to tomorrow four times and it is still sitting there. The dread of it has grown larger than the thing itself. Give me twenty honest minutes to begin. Let me be someone who finishes what he starts, especially the parts nobody would notice going undone. Amen.

A Prayer When Church Feels Hard

Father, I do not want to go and I feel guilty about not wanting to. Something there has hurt or bored or exhausted me and I have not said so out loud. Show me what is honest about my reluctance and what is only avoidance. Give me one person there worth staying for. Amen.

Lord, the emergency is over and this is the part nobody asks about any more. Progress is slow enough that some days I cannot see it at all. Give me patience with a body and a life that are mending on their own timetable. Keep me from measuring today against who I used to be. Amen.

God, I am being formed by a thousand small choices that never feel like decisions at the time. Show me the habits that are quietly shaping me into someone I would not choose. Give me the patience to change slowly rather than dramatically. Make the person I am in ten years someone worth living with. Amen.

A Prayer for a Friend Who Has Stopped Believing

Father, someone I love has quietly stopped believing and I do not know what to say to them. Keep me from arguing when what they need is a friend who stays. Hold on to them in ways they cannot see and would not currently welcome. Let my part be faithfulness rather than persuasion. Amen.

A Prayer When Anger Will Not Cool

Lord, this anger has outlived whatever started it and now it is just living in me. I have rehearsed the conversation a hundred times and won it every time, and none of that has helped. Take the heat out of this before it costs me somebody. Show me what is underneath it, because I suspect it is hurt. Amen.

A Prayer for the First Day of Something New

God, I am walking into a room where I know no one and nothing yet. Settle the nerves enough that I can actually be present. Give me the humility to ask obvious questions and the patience to be new at this for a while. Let me be someone who makes the place better rather than only worrying how I am doing. Amen.

A Prayer When You Are Tempted to Quit

Lord, quitting has begun to sound like wisdom and I honestly cannot tell any more whether it is. Give me clear eyes about what is actually in front of me. If this is Yours, hold me to it and supply what I have run out of. If it is not, make that plain and let me put it down without shame. Amen.
