Forgetting What Is Behind

Philippians 3:13-14

Paul is not proposing that you forget your history. He refers to his own repeatedly, including the worst of it, and never softens the account.

It is eleven at night and you are replaying a conversation from years ago. Or rereading an old message from someone who no longer speaks to you. Or scrolling back through photographs from the year everything seemed to be working.

Forgetting here means refusing to let it govern. He is describing a runner, and a runner who keeps checking the distance behind them loses the race in the checking.

Earlier in the same chapter he lists his credentials. The lineage, the zeal, the spotless record under the law. Then he says he would trade the lot for knowing Christ. The past is not erased. It is outvalued.

That covers two kinds of looking back. The failures you keep examining again, hoping this time the verdict comes out differently. And the successes, which are more dangerous, because a good chapter is a comfortable place to settle.

One thing I do. Not several. Paul was capable of many things and describes a life with a single direction in it. He has also just said he has not yet taken hold of it. A man who wrote a large part of the New Testament describes himself as unfinished. That is where pressing on starts. Not from arrival, but from honest distance.

Straining toward what is ahead. The word is physical, a body at full extension. This is not drifting forward and hoping. It is deliberate, effortful, and it starts again every morning regardless of how yesterday went.

So notice today when your mind turns back. Name what it is looking for, a better verdict or a comfortable chapter. Then turn to the next concrete thing in front of you and do that. One thing.
