Called to Freedom

Galatians 5:13

Paul has spent four chapters arguing that these people are free. Then, the moment he wins the argument, he tells them what freedom is not.

The Galatians had been told that faith in Christ was not quite enough, that they also needed circumcision and the law to be fully in. Paul spent the letter refusing that, at some cost to his friendships. So when he turns here, he is not taking the argument back. He is protecting it from its most obvious misuse.

Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Opportunity is a military word, a base of operations. Something looking for a foothold has just been handed one.

That is the honest risk of grace and Paul names it without blinking. If nothing is required of you, the nearest available use of that is yourself.

Consider a free Saturday. Nothing on the calendar, nobody expecting anything. By evening it has gone entirely on what you wanted, one small indulgence after another, and you feel faintly worse than you would have after a day of work. Nothing wrong happened. It just curved inward, and it left you smaller than it found you. That is roughly what Paul means by the flesh here. Not only the obvious sins. Any life organized around the self.

Then the pivot, and it is startling. Rather, serve one another in love. He does not answer freedom with a rule list. He answers it with a direction to point it in.

Freedom that curves back toward you goes bad. Freedom aimed at somebody else is what it was for.

Find one concrete way to spend some of your freedom on a person this week. Not a feeling about them. Time, money, or an hour you had earmarked for yourself. Put it on the calendar now, with their name on it, before the week decides for you.
